Vitamin D3 + K2: The Pairing I Consider Non-Negotiable

Twenty-five plus years into biohacking and testing my own body, a handful of supplements have earned a permanent spot in my daily routine. Vitamin D3 paired with K2 is one of them, and it’s not close.

Why D3 and K2 Belong Together

Vitamin D3 gets most of the attention. It’s the “sunshine vitamin,” it supports immune function, mood, and bone health, and most people walking around — especially anyone who spends a lot of time indoors or lives somewhere without year-round strong sun — are running lower than they’d like.

Here’s what a lot of people miss: taking D3 on its own is only half the equation. Vitamin D increases calcium absorption in the gut, which is good, but calcium needs a delivery system to know where to go. That’s K2’s job. K2, specifically the MK-7 form, activates proteins that direct calcium into bone and teeth where it belongs, and away from soft tissue like arteries where it doesn’t. Take D3 without K2 long-term and you’re raising calcium levels without giving your body clear instructions on where to put it.

That’s why I don’t take these separately. I take them together, every day, and have for years.

What I Use

My doctor specifically recommended a high-potency D3/K2 combination, and it’s the one I’ve stuck with:

Vitamin D3 K2 (MK-7) with Organic Spirulina

It delivers 10,000 IU of D3 alongside 100 mcg of K2 (MK-7) per capsule, plus organic spirulina. The dose is high potency by design, meant to build up vitamin D levels efficiently rather than take the slow route, and the K2 is included specifically to move that calcium where it needs to go instead of leaving it to accumulate in soft tissue.

What I’ve Noticed Over the Years

The honest answer is that D3/K2 isn’t a supplement that produces a dramatic, felt effect the way something like astaxanthin does for skin. This one works quietly, in the background, on markers you mostly notice through bloodwork and through the absence of problems rather than a specific sensation. That’s actually part of why I trust it. The research behind D3 and K2, individually and together, is some of the most established in the supplement world, and my own labs have reflected that consistency over the years.

Where I have noticed something more tangible is during the darker months, when sun exposure drops. Keeping D3/K2 consistent through fall and winter has made a real difference in how steady my mood and energy feel compared to years when I let it lapse.

A Note on Dosing

10,000 IU is a high daily dose of D3, well above what’s found in most multivitamins, and that’s intentional for building levels up efficiently. But high-potency dosing is exactly the kind of thing that needs individual context. Your current vitamin D levels, sun exposure, skin tone, geography, and any existing health conditions all factor into what dose actually makes sense for you.

Please consult a licensed physician before starting D3/K2 or any new supplement, ideally with bloodwork to check your baseline vitamin D levels first. This is precisely the kind of supplement where “more is better” isn’t automatically true, and a doctor can help you land on the right dose for your body rather than guessing.
