50, Thriving, and Just Getting Started: My Hormone Journey
I’ll be honest — I didn’t expect 50 to feel like this. Not in a bad way. In the best possible way.
After decades of putting everyone else first — raising three kids through sleepless nights, school chaos, and the beautiful mess of teenage emotions — I finally had the space to ask a question I’d been ignoring for years: What does my body actually need right now?
That question changed everything.
This Is My Story. Not Medical Advice. But It’s Real.
I want to be clear upfront: I’m not a doctor, and nothing I share here should be taken as medical guidance. What I can tell you is what I’ve personally experienced, and why I believe every woman deserves to have this conversation with a qualified physician who truly listens.
For me, that physician is Dr. Anthony Maffei — and finding him was one of the best decisions I’ve made for my health.

What Was Happening in My Body
The signs crept in quietly at first. Hot flashes that hijacked meetings. Sleep that left me more exhausted than before I closed my eyes. A stubborn weight that seemed to laugh at my efforts. And that flat, joyless fatigue — not sadness exactly, just a dimness — like someone had turned down the brightness on my life.
“Pushing through” had worked for 30 years. It stopped working here.
The Turning Point: Comprehensive Lab Work and a Real Partnership
What I love about Dr. Maffei’s approach is that he didn’t guess. He didn’t hand me a one-size-fits-all prescription. He started with a comprehensive blood panel to establish my true hormonal baseline — a detailed map of exactly what my body was doing — how I worked out, what I ate, supplements, and then built a fully personalized plan around my chemistry, my history, and my goals.
Three pregnancies, hypothyroidism, hashimottos, gut inflammation. Years of caregiving, long hours of work, managing mental stress, and my current lifestyle and stress levels. He looked at all of it.
What came next was a tailored protocol involving estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone — bioavailable hormones that mirror what my body naturally produces — layered thoughtfully with targeted vitamins and peptides to amplify the results. And crucially, it didn’t stop there. Regular follow-ups mean the plan evolves as my labs, life, and body change.
The Science Is Catching Up — And It’s Exciting
What’s been validating for me personally is watching the research evolve in real time. Emerging studies are showing that hormone replacement therapy — particularly when started at the right time and properly managed — is associated with reductions in all-cause mortality. We’re talking potential protective effects on cardiovascular health, cognitive function, and metabolic health. And something that doesn’t get talked about enough? Bone density. Estrogen plays a critical role in maintaining strong bones, and the decline that comes with menopause significantly raises the risk of osteoporosis — so knowing that HRT may help protect my skeletal strength as I age is something I take seriously. The old fear-based narrative around HRT is being quietly rewritten by the data, and women deserve to know that. Of course, every woman’s situation is unique, which is exactly why having a knowledgeable physician like Dr. Maffei — someone who stays current with the literature and applies it thoughtfully to your individual labs and history — makes all the difference. This isn’t just about feeling better today. The science is suggesting it may actually be about living longer and living better. And honestly? That changes everything.
What I’ve Noticed (And I’m Still a Little Amazed)
I’m not going to pretend the results have been subtle. They haven’t.
My energy is back — not the caffeinated, white-knuckling kind, but a clean, sustained energy that gets me through long days and still has something left over. The hot flashes? Gone. Sleep is deeper. The mental fog has lifted in a way I didn’t fully realize was there until it cleared. And there’s a quiet confidence — that sense of feeling like myself — that I genuinely thought was a casualty of getting older.
HRT gave me my energy back, my sleep back, my confidence back — and yes, my libido back. Nobody talks about this enough, but your desire is part of your vitality, and you deserve to reclaim it!
What surprised me most is how personal this journey is. The same protocol that works beautifully for one woman might not work for another. That’s exactly why blood work and an experienced, attentive doctor aren’t optional — they’re everything.
Why I’m Sharing This
I’m not here to tell you what to do. I’m here because I spent too long assuming this was just “part of aging” — and I don’t want anyone else to waste that time.
I’m pairing all of this with clean, protein-focused eating, intentional movement to protect my muscle mass, and a few other practices that I genuinely believe are setting me up for the next 50+ years — cognitively sharp, physically strong, emotionally grounded, and genuinely happy.
There’s more to the picture than I can fit in one post. If you’re curious about what else I’m doing — the peptides, the nutrition approach, the mindset shifts, the things that have made the biggest difference — I’d love to talk.
As always, this isn’t medical advice — just a woman who reads too many studies and has a really good doctor. Talk to your provider about what the current research means for you specifically.
